History of Annabella, Utah
Annabella, Utah is a small town located in Sevier County. It was established in 1883 and has a population of just over 400 people. The town was named after Annabella, the daughter of one of the early settlers, William N. Johnson.
The first settlers to arrive in Annabella were the Johnson family who arrived in 1883 from Manti, Utah. The Johnsons were looking for an area with plenty of land and good soil for farming and they found it in Annabella. William N. Johnson built the first house and eventually became the town’s first postmaster shortly thereafter.
In 1885, a schoolhouse was constructed to educate the children of Annabella and by 1890 the population had grown to nearly 200 people. During this time period, many businesses began to open up throughout town such as stores, hotels, saloons and blacksmith shops.
The early 1900s saw significant growth for Annabella as more businesses opened up throughout town including a bank, two newspapers and a hotel which served as an important stop on the stagecoach route between Salt Lake City and Richfield.
In 1903, several events occurred that changed Annabella forever: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized its first ward in Annabella; an irrigation system was installed; electricity was connected; telephone lines were established; and a new schoolhouse was built.
The 1920s saw continued growth for Annabella with a new LDS chapel being constructed in 1925 along with several other buildings such as a library and community hall which held dances on Saturday nights that lasted until midnight!
